Since 1996 The British Medical Association (BMA) have organised a medical book competition, which also encompasses the BMA Patient Information Awards. These awards were established ‘ to recognise quality in written patient information leaflets and small booklets. Its aims are to encourage the production and dissemination of accessible, well-designed and clinically balanced materials which will enhance patients’ understanding of health issues and their ability to participate in decisions about their care.’
The main award is for printed booklets and leaflets and there are also special awards for a number of different categories including materials aimed at carers and children and young people.
There is an overall First Prize, and other winning booklets and leaflets are either ‘Highly Commended’ or ‘Commended’.
Since 1995, CCLG has won 8 awards including 2 First Prizes (A Parent’s Guide to Children’s Cancers – 2006; Children with Cancer and Pets - 2008). The award winning publications are indicated with award ribbon logo.
