Emily's Big Walk 2012
3 September 2012 to 28 September 2012Emily’s Big Walk 2012 will be coming to a centre near you in September 2012. This nationwide event to raise funds for CCLG and local cancer centres and charities involves a series of walks throughout September, starting in Aberdeen and ending in September. An Olympic-style ‘torch’ will be handed from centre to centre, completing its journey in London ahead of the prestigious International Paediatric Oncology Society Meeting, being hosted by CCLG in London in early October 2012.
The Walk takes its name from Emily Bailes, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of five in March 2004 and sadly lost her battle on 8th March 2008. The Emily Bailes Fund – Fundraising for CCLG was set up in July 2008. It is is not a separate charity but is dedicated to raising funds for CCLG.
Plans are underway throughout the network of principal treatment centres for the different walks. Although there is a common theme – raising funds and raising the profile of childhood cancer nationwide – each of the walks will have its own distinct feel. This is a really exciting opportunity – we hope as many people as possible will get involved.
Amanda Bailes, mother of Emily, and Sue Ablett, CCLG Executive Director, have committed to walking as many legs of the walk as possible. If anyone is interested in walking (any or all of the legs), or helping out in any way, we would be delighted to hear from you.
